Java Rain, Chikmagalur

Luxury, brewed strong

Western Ghats have a mystery and beauty attached to them, which attracts and fascinates people even to this day, be it for its mythology, spirituality or natural diversity and has rightly earned it the status of World Heritage Site. Luxury Hotels

Legend has it, overcome by remorse, after traversing the globe 21 times avenging the death of his father by the hands of the Kshatriyas, Parashurama gifted away everything he had to the Brahmins and wanted to do more. He swung his famed axe and carved out the western Ghats out of the sea and populated it with Brahmins and planted new species of trees like coconut, banana and jackfruit. Interestingly western Ghats is conspicuous by its absence in the early Vedas. This might be because of the impenetrable forests that can be experienced even to this day along the Western Ghats java rain resort Chikmagalur.

Into this rich tapestry of myths is weaved another motif that defines the Chikmagalur of today, the coffee capital of India. Baba Budan when on his pilgrimage to Mecca came across the dark silky beverage in Mocha, Yemen and smuggled a handful of beans back home and planted it here. Thus began the coffee story of India, cementing Baba Budan’s place in history as the patron saint of the region.

The innumerable coffee estates have changed the face and fortune of Chikmagalur. One such verdant heaven, overlooking the mighty Mullayanagiri, is the stage for the marriage of the old world charm with the modern, aspirational design of a restless India. A labour of love, Java Rain was conceived as a nature retreat in this sanguine country by the youthful yet seasoned hospitality pioneers, Shubha and Shiv. Working closely with a top architectural firm, Cadence in Bangalore shaped this marvel of architecture.

The design and elements of this plantation retreat is inspired by the many travels of the principal promoters in synergy with the nature around. The exposed concrete walls, angled to look like the mountains they are cradled in, merges them into the surrounding. The open to sky bathroom with rain showers emulate the quintessential monsoon experience all year round. The interiors and paintings have been brought from Indonesia giving the entire stay the feel of a tropical forest.

We welcome you to the coffee experiences of “Java Rain, Chikmagalur”.

“A new paradigm of hospitality in the Western Ghats”

The villas, all named after the coffee and its history, are designed with privacy in mind, yet they welcome nature into their hearth. The butterfly roof with the textured walls give it the solid feel of the mountains around. The huge picturesque windows soften it with the emerald view of the surrounding plantation and forests. The crowning glory of the entire retreat is the Crimson Peak which is built to resemble a tall tree and canopy and stands high up affording the guests the most sublime views of the mountains and sunsets, justifying the name.

Wonderful setting and friendly staff, with a marvelous excursion available

Our bungalow was spacious, well equipped and clean. The resort is on a beautiful site by the side of a lake with plenty of open spaces for activities. Lovely open air dining room and infinity pool overlooking the lake. We took the whole day excursion by jeep which started by taking us up a nearby mountain. The last section was done on foot and was reasonably demanding but well worthwhile for the marvelous views from the two temples.at the top. We were then taken to a forest area where we visited two villages seeing initial rubber processing, walking and scrambling up a river to a lovely twin waterfall and spending time in a tribal village with the locals. The trip was completed by a visit to the local rubber plantation and. processing factory which was very interesting, and not a selling opportunity java rain resort Chikmagalur !
