Roop Niwas Kothi, Nawalgarh

Beauty – aspirational and encompassing

With the changing political climes and landscapes, Marwaris, the indigenous people of Shekhawati, rose to prominence and prosperity overcoming great hurdles time and again, be it the Mughals ceasing power or the British ending the Indian Silk Road by opening up the port cities of Bombay and Calcutta. This abundance of wealth and experience gave rise to a love of aesthetics which found expression in the construction of massive Havelis beautifully decorated with fresco paintings all over. The subject of these frescoes ranges from homage to the love of Dhola- Maru to the then aspirational elements like the railways, steam engines and huge ships. The temples built here have a sense of opulence and piety at the same time. The Shekhawati region is an open-air museum unlike any in the world built not by royal patronage but by the citizens at large Roop Niwas Kothi.

Every one of us feels the need to belong. For most of us, nowhere is this need satiated more than when we are back at our origins, our roots, our home. Almost a century ago, Rawal Madan Singh, the scion of the erstwhile estate of Nawalgarh retraced his steps back to his country home in Nawalgarh. He transformed what used to be a simple house and stable into Roop Niwas Kothi with a stable that has become the crowning jewel of this region. True to the times and spirit of the great Shekhawati people, Rawal Madan Singh combined the elements of traditional Rajasthani architecture and the aspirational English elements and created a marvel that has attracted many and has been the family home for decades, where everyone gets to experience the passion and love of the land, its culture and hospitality, bequeathed down the generations and today, Rawal Devendra Singh proudly carries the mantle true to his illustrious ancestors heritage resorts in Rajasthan.

Driving through the semi-arid region of Shekhawati, a short skip from the bustling town of Nawalgarh, on a street named after itself, Roop Niwas Kothi is a welcome sight with its lush green cover and majestic entrance and exterior, fit to welcome the royalty. As you drive through the entrance the beautiful Roop Niwas Kothi comes into view with its perfect harmony between Colonial and Haveli architecture, unique to the Shekhawati, a reflection of the people who are proud of their own legacy and yet welcoming of external influences. The driveway, reminiscent of Old English Manor is a harbinger of your time here. Purebred Indian cattle and horses might welcome you to this doyen of hospitality heritage hotel Rajasthan.

We welcome you to experience “Roop Niwas Kothi”.

“The crown jewel of Nawalgarh!”

The Kothi

Apart from the cultural and legacy aspect of it, the work by Rawal Devendra Singh, his family and staff gain importance in today’s world where preserving the biodiversity is the need of the hour with industrial and monocultural agriculture threatening all the indigenous flora and fauna. The stables at Roop Niwas Kothi have successfully revived the Marwari breed of horses along with the Kathiawadi and Sindhi breeds. Rawal Devendra Singh has not just made it his life’s mission to protect these horse breeds but also has been instrumental in popularizing them globally by conducting various activities like endurance races and horse safaris.

Haven of Calm

Anand on the Sutlej is laid out in a very orderly fashion – almost like a military camp in the jungle! But the cottages are rather tasteful and take you to the sparse design world.

A Lovely Oasis in the countryside

“We stayed here 2 nights on our way from Pragun to Shimla. There are several lovely temples in the area as well as a magnificent museum in Anandpur Sahib. The accommodation complex was new and well maintained and out on its own in the countryside. Our room was lovely
