About Karan Mahal
Perched at the foot of Shankaracharya Hill, nestled within the folds of Kashmir’s verdant valleys, Karan Mahal is not just a residence—it is a rare glimpse into history. Constructed in the 1920s and once home to the Crown Prince of Jammu & Kashmir, Dr. Karan Singh, the estate has quietly witnessed the turning of political tides, royal gatherings, and poetic stillness in equal measure.
Surrounded by panoramic vistas—Dal Lake and the Zabarwan range to the north, the sweeping Pir Panjal mountains to the south—this storied home continues to hold space for quiet grandeur and deep reflection.
A House of History and Hospitality
From its days as the Governor’s Residence to a discreet royal abode, Karan Mahal has played host to global dignitaries: Khrushchev, Nehru, Edwina Mountbatten, Indira Gandhi, and Joseph Campbell among others. The presence of Maharani Yasho Rajya Laxmi imbued these gatherings with warmth and grace, her hospitality remembered as much as the conversations held beneath crystal chandeliers.
The elegant European-style villa, restored by Yuvraj Vikramaditya Singh and Yuvrani Chitrangada Raje, reopened in 2021 after a decade-long restoration. Today, it welcomes a limited number of guests seeking privacy, beauty, and a deep connection with Kashmir’s regal and natural heritage.
Srinagar & Dal Lake
Often described as Paradise on Earth, Srinagar is the timeless heart of Kashmir—where snow-draped peaks meet flowering gardens, and mirrored lakes reflect centuries of poetry, art, and spiritual depth. From the floating vegetable markets on Dal Lake to the Mughal gardens, ancient shrines, and handcrafted wonders of the old city, Srinagar offers a sensory richness that is both soulful and unforgettable. It is a place where seasons transform the very rhythm of life—and where the past and present quietly coexist.
Karan Mahal lies in one of Srinagar’s most coveted locations—Gupkar Road—where forested hills tumble into orchards and the mirrored waters of Dal Lake stretch into the horizon. To stay here is to experience Srinagar from its most privileged vantage point.
Just minutes from the Royal Springs Golf Course, Mughal Gardens, Tulip Garden, and the old city’s historic quarters, the estate makes for an ideal base to explore the region. The famed Dal Lake, visible from your room, is not merely a view but an experience—board a traditional shikara at dawn and glide through the floating vegetable markets as the valley awakens.
